Description

This is the third workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical practice units. This unit provides students with the opportunity to experience the practice of nursing in real world settings and to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills required for safe practice as a beginning level registered nurse. This unit focuses on providing basic care to patients in a health care setting. In providing this care the student will draw upon the knowledge gained from studies in nursing and health sciences; and the expertise of registered nurses in the clinical setting. The skills that are developed in this unit represent the building blocks of nursing care. Students will demonstrate professionalism as a Stage 3 student in the workplace setting in accordance with School of Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Practice Guidelines and will follow the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Competency Standards of Practice.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from NPP1101, NPP1201, NSC1103, SCN1111

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must study NSC2103 concurrently with NPP2101 in course C33 Bachelor of Science (Nursing).

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NSP2207, NSP2208

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Deliver a developing level of competency in perioperative management in both the simulated environment and the clinical practice setting.
  2. Utilise a developing level medication calculations competency in both the simulated environment and the clinical practice setting.
  3. Assume management of 30-60% of the Registered Nurse workload appropriate to setting.
  4. Demonstrate professional competency in the workplace setting in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Standards of Practice Competencies for the Registered Nurse relevant to the stage 3 scope of practice.

Unit Content

  1. Perioperative requirements and management.
  2. Respiratory requirements and management, airway management, oxygenation administration.
  3. Hydration requirements; intravenous therapy management, calculating intravenous drip rates.
  4. Postoperative skin integrity and complex wound care including drains, vacuum dressings, packing and debriding.
  5. Safe preparation, checking and administration of intramuscular/subcutaneous medications.
  6. Quality use of medications, including issues of life-stage, factors influencing drug response, drug interactions, client compliance, drug development information, poisoning and misuse.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students complete weekly online pre-workshop activities and attend clinical simulation workshops to develop the knowledge, techniques and skills relevant to the stage of scope of practice. Students attend clinical practicum(160 hours)
