Description

This is the first work integrated learning unit in a series of five clinical practice units. In this Unit students will develop foundation knowledge, skills and practice for evidence based nursing care within a legal ethical framework, for the care of adults in a variety of health care settings within an inter-professional team environment. Students will examine the historical foundations and contemporary nursing practice within the Australian healthcare system and the Australian Safety and Quality Framework for Health Care

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explore the development of contemporary nursing practice from a global, national and local perspective.
  2. Evaluate the sustainability of the Australian health care system and the contemporary role of nursing within the system in different settings and the inter-professional team.
  3. Examine the ethical & legal principles and governance frameworks of nursing practice
  4. Determine the impact that altered health may have on an individual from a physical and psychosocial perspective.
  5. Appraise the Australian Safety and Quality Framework for Health Care and discuss implications for nursing practice.
  6. Describe and conduct a culturally competent comprehensive nursing health assessment utilising professional communication skills.
  7. Demonstrate clinical decision making skills to meet the health needs of adult patients.
  8. Demonstrate competency in beginning evidence based nursing care including selected clinical skills, documentation and oral medication administration.

  1. The Australian Health Care System.
  2. Safety & quality use of medicines and principles of medication administration (oral).
  3. Contemporary nursing practice and professional frameworks.
  4. Inter-professional practice.
  5. Legal and ethical issues in nursing practice.
  6. Responses to health and illness.
  7. Australian Safety and Quality Framework for Health Care.
  8. Fundamental clinical skills including assisting with activities of living; wound care and infection control.
  9. Electronic and paper based health record documentation.
  10. Nursing health assessment and clinical decision making in health care assessment and care delivery.

Lectures, simulation workshops, and clinical practicum (160 hours)

GS4 GRADING SCHEMA 4 Used for undifferentiated pass/fail units

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
