Description

This is the second work integrated learning unit in a series of five clinical practice units. This unit builds on the knowledge & skills gained in Adult Health Practice 1. It focuses on evidence based nursing care within a legal ethical framework, for the nursing care of adults with acute and chronic illnesses, and clients undergoing surgery. The major focus for this unit is the development of more complex nursing interventions to provide safe, evidence-based nursing care; clinical decision making, and care of the deteriorating client.

Prerequisite Rule

Must pass NPP6101 and NSC6101

Co-Requisite Rule

Students are required to complete NSC6102 and NPP6102 concurrently or alternatively complete NSC6102 prior to completing NPP6102.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the continuum of nursing care from admission to discharge for clients with acute and chronic illnesses, and clients undergoing surgery.
  2. Demonstrate development of complex nursing and problem solving skills to provide safe, evidence-based nursing care of adults with acute & chronic illnesses.
  3. Apply clinical decision making to prioritise care needs & develop plans of care for clients with varying acute & chronic health conditions, and clients undergoing surgery.
  4. Utilise knowledge and skills to deliver evidence based care for the deteriorating patient.
  5. Detail the principles of client education & utilise strategies to appropriately plan, implement & evaluate client education.
  6. Collaborate with the inter-professional healthcare team to provide comprehensive nursing care to adults.
  7. Evaluate strategies for promoting safety and quality in healthcare including the role of clinical audits.

Unit Content

  1. Continuum of nursing care (admission to discharge)
  2. Perioperative nursing care.
  3. Complex nursing skills including; wound care, sutures, staples and drains, stoma care, urinary catheterisation, medication calculation and administration, parenteral medication, not pharmacological treatments, intravenous therapy, blood transfusion, oxygen therapy and suctioning, UWSD, nasogastric tube insertion & management.
  4. Clinical decision-making in health assessment & care delivery.
  5. Deteriorating patient.
  6. Principles of patient education.
  7. Strategies for safety and quality.
  8. Clinical audit.
  9. Adult health nursing practice with inter-professional health care team.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are also required to complete clinical practicums such as 2 placements of 10 days x 8 hours per day = 80 hours per placement (total 160 hours) or other combinations of practicum hours.
