Description

This is the third workplace integrated learning unit in a series of five clinical practice units. In this unit students will develop knowledge, skills and practice for evidence based nursing care within a legal ethical framework, for mental health promotion and for the care of clients with an acute or chronic mental illness from diverse cultural backgrounds, in a variety of health care settings within an inter-professional team environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the concepts of mental health, mental health promotion, mental illness and ethical practice.
  2. Evaluate mental health care resources for care delivery in community and in-patient settings.
  3. Collaborate with the inter-professional healthcare team to provide mental health nursing care.
  4. Examine the prevalence of mental health problems and illness in Australia and analyse the impact on individuals, families and communities.
  5. Detail the impact of social determinants on mental health and the promotion of well-being.
  6. Examine mental health legislation and theoretical frameworks and how they translate into clinical practice.
  7. Determine the aetiology, clinical manifestations, assessment and nursing care of common mental health disorders.
  8. Describe and evaluate psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions used in mental health care.
  9. Critique strategies for therapeutic client relationships that actively involve clients and families in their treatment and care.

  1. Concepts of mental health and prevalence of mental health illness.
  2. Nursing care of a client with a mental health disorder.
  3. Therapeutic relationships with clients and families.
  4. Recovery oriented mental health nursing practice for consumer centred care with the interprofessional health care team
  5. Impact of social determinants on mental health and well-being.
  6. Mental Health Act & classification of mental health disorders.
  7. Mental state examination & risk assessment.
  8. Theoretical frameworks for mental health nursing care.
  9. Psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions.
  10. Legal & ethical issues of mental health care.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials, and clinical practicum (160 hours).

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
