Description

This is the first work-integrated learning unit in a series of five clinical practice units. In this unit, students will learn from each other to develop foundation knowledge, skills and practice for evidence-based nursing care within a legal ethical framework, for the care of adults in a variety of health care settings within an inter-professional team environment.

Students may undertake practicum hours out of the standard timetable. Refer to the School of Nursing and Midwifery clinical placement calendar.

Co-Requisite Rule

Must be studied concurrently with NSC6101 Nursing Bioscience 1

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NPP6101.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Determine the impact that altered health may have on an individual from a physical and psycho-social perspective.
  2. Describe and conduct a culturally competent comprehensive nursing health assessment utilising professional communication skills.
  3. Demonstrate clinical decision-making skills to meet the health needs of adult patients.
  4. Demonstrate competency in beginning evidence-based nursing care including selected clinical skills, documentation and oral medication administration.

Unit Content

  1. Responses to health and illness.
  2. Communication - Handover and electronic and paper-based health record documentation.
  3. Health assessment and clinical decision making in health care assessment and care delivery.
  4. Fundamental clinical skills.
  5. Safety and quality use of medicines and principles of medication administration (oral).
  6. Reciprocal learning - encourage peer review enabling skills required for both preceptors and mentors.

Students are required to complete clinical placement totalling 120 hours. Pre-identified clinical placement periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
