Description

This is the first of workplace integrated learning units for the course. Weekly practical workshops will enable students to develop knowledge and skills learned in this unit as well as the nursing theory units. The content of this unit focuses on the development of beginning level knowledge, techniques, professionalism and skills required for a student at stage 1 of the program. Students will develop beginning level critical thinking skills in relation to risk assessment and management, physical assessment, assisting with activities of daily living and promoting patient’s well-being.

Prerequisite Rule

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional competency in the simulated setting in accordance with the NMBA RN standards for practice relevant to the stage one scope of practice.
  2. Describe and demonstrate the principles of undertaking a physical assessment.
  3. Accurately collect and record derived health data to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  4. Describe the principles of safe manual handling and demonstrate the ability to maintain safe body mechanics when undertaking patient care.
  5. Describe the nursing care principles underpinning selected patient care skills and perform them in a manner which is culturally and developmentally appropriate for the patient.

  1. Principles of infection control.
  2. Clinical handover.
  3. Manual handling.
  4. Falls risk assessment.
  5. Physical assessment skills and history taking.
  6. Activities of daily living.
  7. Nutrition, hydration and elimination.
  8. Vital signs and system assessment and documentation.
  9. Basic life support.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
