Description

In this second of six professional work integrated learning units, students will continue to develop nursing skills required to provide patient care that is holistic, safe, clinically effective and culturally competent. The application of professional standards, reflective practice and a case based approach will enable the student to assess and manage patients in the area of adult nursing.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from NPP1101 or NPU1101

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NPP1201

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform health assessments using an evidence based approach associated with specific clients’ needs and requirements in either the simulated environment and/or the clinical practice setting.
  2. Discuss the rationale for the care of a patient in either the simulated environment and/or the clinical practice setting.
  3. Perform selected basic care skills in a culturally and developmentally appropriate manner using an evidence based approach to client care.
  4. Apply a beginning level of competency with oral medication calculations in both the simulated environment and the clinical practice setting.
  5. Demonstrate professional competency in the workplace setting in accordance with the NMBA RN standards for practice relevant to the stage two scope of nursing practice.

Unit Content

  1. The Nursing Process and assessment.
  2. Nutrition.
  3. Assessment of neurological, musculoskeletal, abdominal and neurovascular systems.
  4. Fluid balance, electrolyte and acid base balance, oxygenation.
  5. Sleep and pain management.
  6. Medication calculations and documentation as per NSQHS Medication Safety Standard.
  7. Patient education – including deep breathing and leg exercises.
  8. Essential nursing skills – including aseptic techniques.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
