Description

Nursing Practice 3 is the third work integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical practice units. Building on previous studies, students will further develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills required for safe practice as a beginning level registered nurse. Students will provide basic nursing care to patients in a health care setting evidenced by successful completion of 4 weeks of clinical practice in accordance with practice standards for stage three nursing students set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. This is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed 1 unit from (NPP1201 or NPU1202) and 1 unit from (NSC1103 or NUM1203) OR must have passed 4 units in (NPU1101, NUR2402, NUM2308, NUR3606)

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must study NUM2306 concurrently with NPU2303

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NPP2101

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional competency in the workplace setting in accordance with NMBA RN standards for practice relevant to the stage three scope of nursing practice.
  2. Explain evidence underpinning the practical skills development of nursing students working at a stage three scope of practice.
  3. Explain strategies for providing patient-centred care within a multidisciplinary environment in a culturally and developmentally appropriate manner.
  4. Describe the rationale and nursing care for managing patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine and inflammatory conditions.
  5. Demonstrate competence in the care of patients in a simulated and or clinical environment.

Unit Content

  1. Medication calculations, intravascular access devices and therapy.
  2. Nursing care of patients with wounds: staples / sutures, removal of drains.
  3. Nursing care of patients with respiratory conditions.
  4. Nursing care of patients with cardiac conditions.
  5. Nursing care of patients with diabetes mellitus.
  6. Nursing care of surgical patients.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
