Description

This unit introduces increasingly complex nursing knowledge and skills. Students will incorporate critical thinking to assist decision-making and delivery of care to patients experiencing a range of health problems. Students will work in various health facilities to gain a greater appreciation of the role of the registered nurse, and demonstrate professionalism and competency of a stage four student in the workplace setting.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from NPP2101 or NPU2303 and NSC2103 or NUM2306 and NUM2307 or NCS2102

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must study NUM2409 concurrently with NPU2404

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NPP2201

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional competency in the workplace setting in accordance with the NMBA RN standards for practice relevant to the stage four scope of nursing practice.
  2. Explain evidence underpinning the practical skills development of student nurses working within a stage four scope of practice.
  3. Explain strategies for providing patient-centred care within a multidisciplinary environment in a culturally and developmentally appropriate manner.
  4. Describe the rationale and nursing care for managing patients with neurological, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and haematological conditions.
  5. Demonstrate competency in the management of patients including medication administration in a simulated environment.

  1. Complex medical calculations.
  2. Nursing care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
  3. Nursing care for patients requiring neurological management.
  4. Nursing care for patients with urinary and reproductive conditions.
  5. Nursing care for patients with orthopaedic conditions.
  6. Nursing care for patients with chronic wounds.
  7. Nursing care for patients experiencing shock.
  8. Nursing care for patients requiring blood transfusions (NSQHS St 7).

Additional Learning Experience Information

Interactive learning activities (18 hours), simulation workshops (18 hours) and clinical practicum (160 hours).

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

This unit introduces increasingly complex nursing knowledge and skills. This is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed.

Prerequisite Rule
