Description

This unit consolidates nursing knowledge and skills for caring for patients with complex problems. The focus of the unit is on preparing the student to manage the care of the deteriorating patient. Emphasis is placed on the importance of inter professional collaboration within the broader health care team. Students will incorporate critical thinking to assist decision-making and delivery of care to patients with multiple co-morbidities. Students will work in various health facilities to gain a greater appreciation of the role of the registered nurse, and demonstrate professionalism and competency of a stage five student in the workplace setting. This is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from NCS2201 or NUR2402 and NPP2201 or NPU2404 and NSC2203 or NUM2409

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must study NUR3503 concurrently with NPU3505

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss issues involved in the nursing management of patients with co-morbidities from a range of cultures and backgrounds in a culturally and developmentally appropriate manner.
  2. Demonstrate competency in identification and management of a deteriorating patient in a simulated environment.
  3. Explain the basic principles of management of patients with life threatening conditions.
  4. Perform complex medication calculations in a simulated environment.
  5. Demonstrate professional competency in the workplace setting in accordance with the NMBA RN standards for practice relevant to the stage five scope of practice.

Unit Content

  1. Patients with complex conditions.
  2. The physiology and clinical manifestations of the deteriorating patient (NSQHS St 9).
  3. The principles of ventilation – including non-invasive ventilation and upper airway management.
  4. Arterial lines and Central venous access devices.
  5. Total parenteral nutrition.
  6. Intercostal catheter, pleural drains, pneumothorax.
  7. Escalation processes including medical emergency teams and advanced life support.
  8. Applying advanced critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
