Description

Nursing Practice 5 is the fifth work integrated learning unit in a series of six. This unit consolidates previous knowledge and skills in caring for patients with complex problems. The focus of this unit is on preparing students to manage the care of the deteriorating patient. Emphasis is placed on the importance of inter professional collaboration within the broader health care team and A-E assessment. Students will incorporate critical thinking to assist decision-making and delivery of care to patients with multiple co-morbidities. This is a designated unit which means only one attempt is allowed.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass NPU2404 and HPU2404

Only students studying the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or Bachelor of Science (Nursing)/Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) can enrol in this unit

Co-Requisite Rule

C33 students must study HPU3505, NUM3505 and NUR3503 concurrently Y76 students must study HPU3505 and NUR3503 concurrently

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional competency against the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice in a work integrated learning setting.
  2. Produce evidence of beginning professional development aligned to scope of practice and the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking in the application of safe, evidence-based nursing care.
  4. Analyse the role(s) of interprofessional team members and demonstrate interprofessional practice in the assessment, planning and delivery of care to patients/clients.
  5. Demonstrate competence in A-E primary survey and safe and responsive assessment and management of the deteriorating patient/client.

  2. Clinical handover.
  3. Interprofessional practice.
  4. Nursing guidelines, frameworks, and standards for practice.
  5. A-E primary survey.
  6. Care of the patient/client in shock.
  7. Introduction to cardiac arrythmias.
  8. Patient monitoring.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will complete a full-time, 160 hour clinical placement in medical, surgical, critical care or community setting aimed at developing efficiency in technical and non-technical nursing skills and knowledge.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
