Description

This unit will introduce students to common pathophysiological processes and related pharmacological treatments for conditions commonly experienced by the adult and older adult with particular relevance to the Australian National Health Priorities. Specific foci include musculoskeletal disorders, altered immune function, respiratory disorders and renal disorders. Additionally the unit will consider factors relating to the quality use of medicines, including client compliance, drug development, information poisoning and misuse.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 2 units from NSC1103, SCN1111

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NNS2106

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the common pathophysiological processes related to altered CNS, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, hepatobiliary immune and renal function in the elderly.
  2. Describe the rational and implications for treatments, including pharmacological interventions, related to the specific disease processes covered in this unit.
  3. Explain the major factors associated with the quality use of medicines. This will include client compliance, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, drug misuse and poisoning.

Unit Content

  1. Central Nervous System disorders including parkinsonism, dementia, peripheral nerve injury and spinal cord injury.
  2. Common hepatobiliary disorders.
  3. Common renal disorders.
  4. Endocrine disorders associated with aging including Diabetes Type II.
  5. Immune disorders including hypersensitivity and deficiency.
  6. Issues of quality use of medicines, including life-stage factors influencing drug response, interactions, client compliance, drug development information poisoning and misuse.
  7. Musculoskeletal disorders including osteoporosis and arthritis.
  8. Respiratory disorders including COPD and tuberculosis.
