Description

This unit will introduce students to common pathophysiological processes and related pharmacological treatments for conditions commonly experienced by the adult and older adult with particular relevance to the Australian National Health Priorities. Specific foci include respiratory and cardiovascular disorders, neurological, musculoskeletal, endocrine, gastrointestinal and reproductive disorders.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass NSC1103 and NSC2103.

Only students studying courses C33, Y61, Y76, Y19 or Y79 can enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded NNS2106

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the common pathophysiological processes related to altered CNS, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, hepatobiliary immune and renal function in the elderly.
  2. Explain the major factors associated with the quality use of medicines. This will include client compliance, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, drug misuse and poisoning.
  3. Describe the rational and implications for treatments, including pharmacological interventions, related to the specific disease processes covered in this unit.

Unit Content

  1. Respiratory disorders including COPD and tuberculosis.
  2. Cardiovascular disorders including arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, trauma and shock.
  3. Central Nervous System disorders including parkinsonism, dementia, peripheral nerve injury and spinal cord injury.
  4. Musculoskeletal disorders including osteoporosis and arthritis.
  5. Endocrine disorders associated with aging.
  6. Common Gastrointestinal disorders.
  7. Common Reproductive disorders and sexually transmitted infections.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Learning materials are delivered in blended mode and students complete weekly pre-workshop interactive learning activities. Online students participate in the unit via Blackboard and online communication tools. Weekly content including readings, audio-visual and online materials and learning activities are completed in preparation for tutorial sessions and are used to demonstrate theoretical principles in practice.
