Description

This is a foundation unit developing the student’s ability to understand the concepts of evidence based practice and to apply its principles to nursing care delivery. Using the principles of inquiry based learning, students examine research and evidence based case studies to understand how clinical problems can be addressed and clinical knowledge expanded using research and evidence based practice. An evidence based practice model will be applied as the framework to encourage students to engage with and critique the current evidence base of clinical practices. The unit will introduce the principles of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research approaches, the research process and ethical issues around undertaking research.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss concepts of evidence based practice (EBP) and why nursing clinical decision making is based on the best available evidence.
  2. Apply a systematic approach to locating evidence to address a specific clinical situation.
  3. Compare concepts of different research approaches that can be used to generate evidence.
  4. Discuss how evidence can be translated to a specific context considering the ethical, legal and cultural factors.
  5. Employ EBP and critical thinking skills to make decisions in a specific clinical context.

  2. Introduction to EBP concepts.
  3. Why EBP is necessary in the contemporary health care setting.
  4. Answerable questions in relation to EBP.
  5. Locating evidence – searching the literature for the right type of evidence.
  6. Levels of evidence.
  7. Ascertaining the quality of evidence.
  8. Ethics in research.
  9. Disseminating research findings.
  10. Translating evidence into nursing and midwifery practice, culture of inquiry, critical thinking.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
