Description

This unit explores the importance of implementing research and clinical teaching in nursing practice. Students' knowledge of evidence based practice serves as a base from which to consider research from a governance perspective of healthcare. Clinical teaching principles, teaching strategies and the role of different types of clinical educators and learners will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Examine best practice principles for teaching in the clinical environment.
  2. Analyse the roles of mentor, preceptor and clinical supervisor and their importance to the teaching and learning strategies for successful clinical education.
  3. Evaluate common research principles used by health service organisations.
  4. Examine how teaching practices are altered to cater for different patient groups.
  5. Discuss strategies for implementing evidence based practice into clinical care.

  1. Clinical education in nursing practice.
  2. Principles of adult learning.
  3. Teaching – peers versus patients/clients, teaching at the bedside and patient education.
  4. Preceptorship.
  5. Clinical supervision models.
  6. Changing teaching approaches to suit the audience.
  7. Research in clinical practice.
  8. How clinical nurses can be involved in research.

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
