Description

This unit is designed to facilitate independent study, focusing on the formulation of a critical review of the literature, usually in the area of the students future project or research topic. The direction and dimensions of the study will be tailored to individual student needs at the discretion of the unit coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Formulate a comprehensive information retrieval process.
  2. Identify learning needs related to their professional role or in a specific area of research.
  3. Produce a critical review and evaluation of the literature.
  4. Synthesise information pertaining to their area of practice through the critical review and identification of gaps in the literature.
  5. Utilise appropriate theory and research to extend their knowledge in a specific area of study.

Unit Content

  1. Bibliographic software.
  2. Conducting a search of the literature.
  3. Critical analysis of sources identified.
  4. Identifying gaps in the literature and demonstrate potential application to practice.
  5. Research design.
  6. Writing a literature review.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The student will negotiate an individual learning contract with an appointed faculty member. The content and resources required to fulfill the contract will be identified, and strategies and time frames determined. It is expected that the contract will directly reflect an issue or project specific to the student?s area of health specialisation.Off campus students will be faciliated by technology through Adobe Connect tutorials.
