Description

This unit introduces students to the concept of evidence based practice (EBP) and its application to quality improvement in health care. Using the principles of inquiry-based learning, students will examine research and evidence based case studies to understand how clinical problems can be addressed and clinical knowledge expanded using research and evidence based practice. An evidence based practice model will be applied as the framework to encourage students to engage with and critique the current evidence base of clinical practices. The unit will introduce the principles of qualitative, quantitative and mixed method research approaches, the research process and ethical issues around undertaking research.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass two units NCS1101 or NUR1101 and NCS1102 or NUM1102

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss concepts of evidence based practice (EBP) and why nursing/midwifery clinical decisions making is based on the best available evidence.
  2. Apply a systematic approach to locating evidence to address a specific clinical situation.
  3. Compare concepts of different research approaches that can be used to generate evidence.
  4. Discuss how evidence can be translated to a specific context considering the ethical, legal and cultural factors.
  5. Employ EBP and critical thinking skills to make decisions in a specific clinical context.

  1. Quality improvement methodologies.
  2. Translating evidence into nursing and midwifery practice, culture of inquiry, critical thinking.
  3. Introduction to EBP concepts.
  4. Why EBP is necessary in the contemporary health care setting.
  5. Answerable questions in relation to EBP.
  6. Locating evidence searching the literature for the right type of evidence.
  7. Levels of evidence.
  8. Ascertaining the quality of evidence.
  9. Ethics in research.
  10. Disseminating research findings.
