Description

This unit will explore the importance of governance, management and leadership in nursing. Contemporary management principles and leadership behaviours will be discussed. The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards governing clinical practice will be examined as will the importance of the incorporation of quality improvement methodologies.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 2 units from NPU3505 or NPP3101 and NUR3504 or NCS3202

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critique best practice principles for governance in the clinical environment.
  2. Explain the roles of nurses and other health professionals in implementing quality improvement methodologies.
  3. Evaluate common management principles used by health service organisations.
  4. Examine how the National Safety and Quality Health Service standards govern clinical practice.
  5. Differentiate between management and leadership and the impact of each to nursing care.

Unit Content

  1. Organisational structure and culture.
  2. Leadership styles / model – followership, mentorship, preceptorship, clinical supervision.
  3. Management styles Management of nursing care at macro to micro levels Models of nursing practice – skill mix, team nursing, primary nursing, safe practice, delegation etc. Professional and interpersonal relationships in nursing practice
  4. Change management.
  5. Problem solving strategies and critical thinking.
  6. National Safety and Quality Health Standards.
  7. Clinical governance.
  8. Quality improvement methodologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Interactive learning activities (18 hours), tutorials (18 hours), online activities.
