Description

This unit explores emerging and contemporary issues in nursing care. The use of technologies, research and health informatics will be discussed in relation to the national health priorities. National and international issues impacting on healthcare delivery and nursing practice will be examined in conjunction with their potential implications for future practice.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass NUM3511 OR NCS3102

Only students studying courses C33, Y61 or Y76 can enrol in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss emerging technologies and their use in the contemporary health care environment.
  2. Explore the evolving roles of the nurse in the health care environment.
  3. Examine the global and local political, legal and social influences effecting contemporary nursing practice.
  4. Analyse current research trends in the health care environment and their translation to nursing practice.

Unit Content

  1. Health informatics – future of nursing, telehealth, e.Health, medications, practice/information software and related ethical and legal issues.
  2. Current research trends – translation to practice, international perspectives .
  3. Current issues / trends. WHO/ Australia National health priorities Ageing population Community oriented care and increasing chronicity Increasing acuity in hospitals
  4. Workforce issues – new nursing roles.
  5. Facilitating patient information transfer between hospital and community, patient journey / discharge planning.
  6. Changing complexity of current health care.

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
