Description

This unit is designed to expand students’ knowledge of contemporary care in relation to the older persons’ cognitive, psychological, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual well-being. Students will explore and analyse the evidence-based delivery of care and services to meet the needs of older persons experiencing a range of neurocognitive and mental health disorders and support their social, emotional, cultural and spiritual well-being. The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the Aged Care Quality Standards provide the framework within which students will develop the knowledge and skills to support multiple care domains care of the older person in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically review the comprehensive cognitive, psychological, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual care needs of older persons.
  2. Evaluate the effect of an individuals’ lived experience (past and present) on the cognitive, psychological, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual well-being of the older person.
  3. Analyse evidence-based strategies to deliver appropriate cognitive, psychological, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual care and support to older persons.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction to the cognitive, psychological, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual care needs of older persons.
  2. Care of the older person experiencing common neurocognitive disorders (delirium, dementia, mild NCD, moderate NCD)
  3. Supporting mental health and wellbeing of the older person (depression, neurosis and psychosis)
  4. Supporting the older person with substance use
  5. Caring of the older person with behaviours of concern
  6. Living well as an older person
  7. Partnering in care with the older person and their significant others
  8. Health literacy and navigation of care delivery services
  9. Providing culturally competent care to those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

  2. Provide culturally competent care to those from culturally and linguistic diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
  3. Care of the older person experiencing common neurocognitive and neurodegenerative disorders.
  4. Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the older person.
  5. Caring for the older person experiencing unmet needs and responsive behaviours.
  6. Understanding what it means to live with neurocognitive disorders in the current context and introduction of contemporary strategies to support the person's wellbeing.
