Description

This unit is designed to expand students’ knowledge of contemporary care in relation to the older persons’ holistic well-being. Students will explore and analyse the evidence-based delivery of care and services to meet the needs of older persons experiencing a range of neurocognitive and mental health disorders and support their holistic well-being. The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the Aged Care Quality Standards provide the framework within which students will develop the knowledge and skills to support multiple care domains of the older person in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the effectiveness of an individual's lived experience past and present on the holistic wellbeing of the older person.
  2. Describe neurocognitive, neurodegenerative, mental health and other relevant conditions experienced by the older person.
  3. Evaluate evidence-based strategies to deliver culturally appropriate holistic care and support to older persons.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction to holistic needs of the older person.
  2. Provide culturally competent care to those from culturally and linguistic diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
  3. Care of the older person experiencing common neurocognitive and neurodegenerative disorders.
  4. Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the older person.
  5. Caring for the older person experiencing unmet needs and responsive behaviours.
  6. Understanding what it means to live with neurocognitive disorders in the current context and introduction of contemporary strategies to support the person's wellbeing.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Plagiarism

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

All commencing ECU students are required to complete the Academic Integrity Module.

Assessment Extension
