Description

This unit is designed to expand students’ knowledge of care and service delivery in relation to the older persons’ contemporary care needs. Students will explore and analyse the evidence-based delivery of care and services to older persons experiencing a range of current and emerging care needs of the ageing population. The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the Aged Care Quality Standards provide the framework within which students will develop the knowledge and skills to support the care needs and wellbeing of older persons in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically review the contemporary care needs of the ageing population.
  2. Analyse evidence-based strategies to deliver culturally appropriate care and support to older persons.
  3. Evaluate approaches to lead and manage the delivery of care and services to older persons in a variety of settings.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction to contemporary care needs of the older person.
  2. Specialised health assessment of the older person.
  3. Fall prevention and management of the older person.
  4. Meeting the continence needs of the older person and maintaining skin integrity.
  5. Medication management and polypharmacy in ageing.
  6. Pain assessment and management of the older person.
  7. Standards of quality care and service delivery in residential, community and acute care services to promote wellness as an older person.
  8. Partnering in care with the older person and their significant others incorporating health literacy and navigation of care delivery services.
  9. Supporting the older person and their significant others at the end of life.
  10. Providing culturally competent care to those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
