Description

Students will explore the role of the nurse on the physical, psychological and emotional well-being of children and young people in a variety of health care contexts. These health care contexts primarily relate to primary care and rural and remote settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically reflect upon the epidemiology of disease in childhood.
  2. Formulate prevention strategies for a range of communicable diseases.
  3. Construct a health promotion strategy for children and young people.
  4. Appraise the evidence which supports effective nutrition strategies for children and young people.
  5. Illustrate strategies which promote the safety of children and young people.

Unit Content

  1. Epidemiology of diseases in children and young people.
  2. Immunisation programs.
  3. Communicable diseases.
  4. Health promotion of children at risk including Indigenous Australian children.
  5. Nutrition of children and young people.
  6. Environmental and social factors of disease prevalence.
  7. Child protection and the rights of the child.
  8. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
  9. Children in crisis.
