Description

Students will learn how to assess the energy needs of active populations and gain awareness of the impact that nutrition has upon performance. A range of factors that influence dietary requirements including environmental conditions, food preferences and the type of training undertaken will be examined.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed NUT1121.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate global exercise and sports nutrition evidence to determine best practice nutritional strategies for active populations.
  2. Analyse the relationship between food energy and the physical demands of specific forms of exercise to determine optimal nutritional requirements.
  3. Create awareness of nutritional supplements and doping’ among active populations .
  4. Work collaboratively to develop safe exercise nutrition recommendations for diverse population groups.

  1. Dietary and physical assessment of active populations.
  2. Overview of energy production from carbohydrates, fat and protein.
  3. Hydration strategies for training and competition.
  4. Modifying body composition.
  5. Efficacy of supplements and ergogenic aids for performance.
  6. Vitamin & mineral deficiencies and its impact on exercise capacity.
  7. Energy availability in relation to disordered eating.
  8. Exercise nutrition for diverse populations.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students evaluate case studies and current research in small groups to build critical thinking and collaboration skills. Exercise nutrition knowledge is applied in tandem with international guidelines to build global perspectives. Students undertake group-based food preparation and recipe modification activities. Students have the opportunity to complete their Australian Sports Anti-doping Authority Level 1 Anti-doping Certificate in this unit.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
