Description

In this unit students participate in six weeks of full-time, supervised work placement in a community nutrition organisation. The supervisory and assessment requirements are defined by the Australian Dietetics Council.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed NUT6103, NUT6104, NUT6105 and NUT6106.

Equivalent Rule

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Advocate for nutrition issues within the community and public health domain.
  2. Demonstrate an organised, reflective, professional, collaborative and ethical approach to working within the community domain.
  3. Develop justifiable recommendations for community and public health nutrition practice.
  4. Critically evaluate the impact of community and public health nutrition interventions on individuals, groups and/or communities.
  5. Create relevant project resources.
  6. Apply nutrition management principles in the community setting.
  7. Negotiate work goals with supervisors and colleagues for achievement of project outcomes.
  8. Demonstrate the application of evidence-based practice within the community and public health nutrition domain.

Unit Content

  1. Application of community and public health principles to populations to achieve nutrition-related and dietetics-related outcomes.
  2. Government and non-government documents/policies relevant to nutrition in the community.
  3. Management, communication and negotiation skills.
  4. Documentation styles and requirements of the workplace.
  5. Professional work skills within a diverse range of settings.
  6. Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) documents: National Competency Standards for Dietitians in Australia 2015; DAA Statement of Ethical Practice; DAA Code of Professional Conduct.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit includes a six week, full-time community and public health nutrition placement within a non-government or government agency in the community. The placement provides students with the opportunity to apply the theory and knowledge of evidence-based practice in real world situations. The placement aims to develop skills in community and public health nutrition, including intervention planning, implementation and evaluation. A Preceptor and other staff on-site support and guide student progress and liaise regularly with the ECU representative/CPHN domain leader.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
