Description

This unit is an introduction to the social determinants of health and the global issues that affect people's health. It considers the outcomes of occupational injustice and links between occupational performance and the health of individuals, groups and communities. There will be coverage of the philosophical principles that guide the development of occupational therapy roles with marginalised populations, and how occupational therapy principles and practice can incorporate public health, health promotion, advocacy and leadership approaches.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the effects of occupational deprivation on the health of individuals, groups and communities.
  2. Describe the social determinants and global issues that affect health.
  3. Explain the power of occupation for capacity building in health for individuals, groups and communities.
  4. Outline the social vision of occupational therapy of a more just society where disability, old age, and other marginalising conditions and experiences are addressed.
  5. Relate to public health and health promotion approaches of service delivery.
  6. Use advocacy knowledge and skills to support people in marginalised or neglected groups or communities to participate in their daily occupations of choice.

  1. An occupational injustice framework foridentifying occupationalinjustices in daily life.
  2. Impact of legislation, sustainability of health, economic systems, and cultural influences (including Indigenous culture).
  3. Occupational therapy and the social field therapy and society.
  4. Occupational therapy models including theModel of Human Occupation, the Occupational Performance Model and the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Enablement.
  5. Overcoming occupational injustice.
  6. Principles and theoretical foundations that guide the development of occupational therapy rolesin marginalised populations.
  7. Social determinants of health and the global issues that affect people's health.
  8. The International Classification of Functioning, primary health care and socio-ecological frameworks.
  9. The link between health and social justice.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, laboratories, small group discussion and activities, guest speakers, e-learning activities.
