Description

This unit provides an introduction to areas of occupational therapy practice and professional conduct for occupational therapy practitioners. It covers the core values, attitudes and philosophical foundations embodied in the professions code of ethics. The relevance of values clarification and values inquiry to professional practice is investigated. Students also learn about risk management assessment and responses to physically challenging, emergency or threatening situations in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Commence a professional portfolio.
  2. Critically analyse the principles of values clarification and values enquiry as applied in occupational therapypractice.
  3. Demonstrate skills to effectively assess and manage physically challenging, emergency or threatening situations in the workplace.
  4. Describe the core values, attitudes and philosophical foundations embodied in the professions code of ethics.
  5. Describe the elements of professional conduct for occupational therapy practitioners.

Unit Content

  1. Academic integrity module.
  2. An overview of the history of Occupational Therapy.
  3. Application of referencing and literature search skills.
  4. Cultural awareness and sensitivity to diverse communities related to clinical healthcare settings.
  5. Elements of effective communication.
  6. Manual handling, risk management assessment and ways to respond in a threateningsituation.
  7. The Australian Association of Occupational Therapists' Code of Ethics.
  8. The notion of what it means to be a health professional.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, laboratories, E-learning activities, small group activities, discussions and fieldwork clinics.
