Description

This unit provides an introduction to areas of occupational therapy practice and professional conduct for occupational therapy practitioners. Students will learn about the range of people that occupational therapists work with, and the impact of health conditions, impairment and disability on occupation. As this is an introductory fieldwork unit, we will cover information related to all clinical placements including manual handling, universal precautions and risk management.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Examine current and contemporary literature to understand the impact of health conditions, impairment and disability on occupation.
  2. Communicate professionally and with respect for others, using appropriate verbal and non-verbal skills in diverse occupational contexts.
  3. Apply knowledge of the core values, ethical standards, legal responsibilities and attitudes to develop professional occupational therapy competence.
  4. Demonstrate responsibility for personal and professional conduct through practicum preparations and placement behaviour.

  1. Application of referencing and literature search skills.
  2. Academic integrity module.
  3. Elements of effective communication.
  4. Manual handling, risk management assessment and universal precautions.
  5. Cultural awareness and sensitivity to diverse communities related to clinical healthcare settings.
  6. The Australian Association of Occupational Therapists' Code of Ethics.
  7. An overview of the history of Occupational Therapy.
  8. The notion of what it means to be a health professional.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
