This unit provides an introduction to areas of occupational therapy practice and professional conduct for occupational therapy practitioners. Students will learn about the range of people that occupational therapists work with, and the impact of health conditions, impairment and disability on occupation. As this is an introductory fieldwork unit, we will cover information related to all clinical placements including manual handling, universal precautions and risk management.
Students will attend a four to five day placement (dependent on availability). Placement partners may change placement timing and shifts with minimal notice because of operational demands. This is outside of the control of ECU.

Students experience an environment where they observe and/or participate in the application of theoretical knowledge and skills in a professional setting, under the supervision of an expert or professional in the field. Examples include study tours, observation, shadowing, fieldwork, industry tours.
The on-campus lectures and labs are highly interactive to introduce concepts of professional practice in occupational therapy with hands on activities. Students must complete a series of supervised observations of an occupational therapist, in an appointed work environment within a public, private or non-profit organisation.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.
Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
