In this unit students learn about the human nervous system and the neuroscience concepts that are relevant for occupational therapy practice. Students investigate how the nervous system is organised, and how different structures work together to enable human functions such as movement, sensory perception, memory, emotion and cognition. Students learn about the developmental changes that occur to a person’s brain and nervous system at different stages of life and how the nervous system changes itself when a person learns, sleeps and develops new capabilities. The unit explores the effects of neurotrauma and disease upon a person’s ability to perform daily activities and participate in daily occupations.
Students must be enrolled in H96.

Students engage in hands-on practical laboratories using a range of anatomy models, images, plastinated brains and three-dimensional brain apps. Students use tests and measures such as Snellen charts and myofilament tests, to build their knowledge of neuroscience concepts and how these concepts are relevant in occupational therapy contexts. Engaging classroom activities and discussions encourage students to discuss their understanding of concepts such as neuroplasticity with other students, and work in small groups to complete laboratory tasks and learning challenges. Students gain experience in using complex terminology accurately, to improve their confidence with communicating to other people.

Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
