Description
This unit involves the study of physiological, biomechanical and psychological principles to understand the musculoskeletal disorders that occur in work, school, home and leisure settings. It examines the application of biomechanical principles to the everyday activities of people who need to adapt to changes in their functional abilities. An evidence-based approach is adopted in the consideration of risk factors and the analysis and management of musculoskeletal disorders.
Prerequisite Rule
Students must pass 6 units from EBH1101, EBH1102, OCT1101, OCT1205, OCT1206, OCT1208
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Apply commonly used formulae in biomechanics.
- Apply compensatory interventions that enhance upper limb function.
- Assess compensatory interventions that enhance upper limb function.
- Describe biomechanical principles and the study of human movement as they apply to occupational therapy.
- Design compensatory interventions that enhance upper limb function.
- Explain basic kinesiology concepts applied to the musculoskeletal regions of the head and torso, the proximal upper extremity, the distal upper extremity, and the lower extremity.
- Identify normal and pathokinesiology of the distal upper extremity.
- Perform biomechanical analysis of function.
Unit Content
- A multidisciplinary basis for the understanding of biomechanics and occupational therapy.
- Basic biomechanical concepts applied to musculoskeletal regions: head and torso; proximal and distal upper extremity; lower extremity.
- Concepts of gravity as; a constant force; linear force and motion; rotary force and motion; torque and motion.
- Examination of the four regions of the upper extremity: shoulder complex; elbow and forearm complex; wrist; hand.
- Identification of risk factors in musculoskeletal disorders.
- Introduction to qualitative and quantitative measurement in the analysis of human movement.
- The analysis and management of musculoskeletal disorders.
Additional Learning Experience Information
Lectures, practical laboratory-based learning activities, e-learning, small group activities and discussions to generate ideas and solve problems.
