Description

This is the first unit in a series of three extended professional practice units the students need to complete. These units enable students to gain occupational therapy experience in workplace settings to develop the skills and capabilities necessary for registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia. Under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist, students are required to demonstrate the occupational therapy process with people across the lifespan and who have a range of conditions. Professional practice activities of information gathering, report writing, and service delivery are included. Students also need to develop organisational and time management skills to work both independently and as a member of a team. Professional behaviour is required throughout the placement to ensure a culturally sensitive and respectful approach. Students complete a minimum of 240 hours of placement within private, public or rural settings. Pre-placement screens, vaccinations and training need to be completed before commencing placement.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This unit consists of 1 x 2 hour seminars per week for nine (9) weeks. There may also be other mandatory activities scheduled to support students' preparation for placement. A simulated interprofessional learning experience will also provide additional learning and preparation. Students will undertake professional placement during the hours specified by the placement provider and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, placement days and hours may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

H96 students must be enrolled in or previously completed OCT3107 or OCT3205 and OCT3207 or OCT2204. Y63 students need to be enrolled in, or completed OCT3107 or OCT3205 and OCT3210.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the professional behaviours and self-management skills, including the legal and ethical responsibilities required within an occupational therapy practice setting.
  2. Demonstrate professional and culturally safe oral, written and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a range of people.
  3. Apply occupational therapy knowledge and evidence to demonstrate developing competent occupational therapy practice.
  4. Use reflective practice to support lifelong learning.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are required to submit compulsory pre-placement documents that show they have completed necessary background checks, training, vaccinations, and medical screens. To participate in placement and to be eligible to pass this unit these pre-placement requirements must be completed and submitted within specified timeframes. Students may have their placement cancelled or ceased and they may receive a fail grade if they do not complete their pre-placement preparation as required. Students attend a series of preparation seminars in the first 9 weeks of semester. During the placement, students use the Student Practice Evaluation Form – Revised (Second Edition) (or SPEF-R2) to guide their learning. They are required to keep evidence of their achievements, capabilities, and self-reflections. In collaboration with their placement supervisor a student is assessed using the Student Practice Evaluation Form – Revised (Second Edition). The SPEF-R2 is completed at the midway point and at the end of the placement.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Plagiarism

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
