Description

This unit considers creativity, what it is, and how it is used to promote health and well-being in individuals and communities and to appreciate and understand cultural differences.It exploresthe creative and expressive processes used in activities such as drama, art, dance and music and the contribution these make to enhance well-being through interaction, self-awareness, learning, self-expression, communication and personal development.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 3 units from OCT3108, OCT3205, OCT3206

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse their own experience with a creative project utilising an occupational therapy model.
  2. Critique theories associated with the different forms of creative and expressive arts.
  3. Examine creative and expressive arts in the context of occupational therapy.
  4. Plan and implement a session that uses a creative or expressive occupation to promote the personal development, health and well-being of participants.
  5. Use creative and expressive activities to promote well-being through enhanced interaction, self-awareness, learning, communication and personal development.

Unit Content

  1. Drama, art, dance and music and their use to fit the self-concept of the individual or group.
  2. Evidence on the relationship between creative and expressive arts and emotions, health and well-being.
  3. The capacity of creative and expressive arts to develop creative and expressive processes of an individual.
  4. The relationship of self-awareness and personal development with enhanced healthy outcomes and sense of well-being.
  5. The use of creative and expressive arts by individuals and groups.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Seminars, laboratories, activity-based learning exercises, guest speakers, self-reflection, student presentations, experiential group work.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
