Description

This unit will cover workplace strategies for the management of occupational safety and health hazards. Proactive risk management approaches will also be covered in view of legislative requirements and performance evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of occupational health and safety management systems, with reference to appropriate legislation, to manage hazards and promote workplace health and safety
  2. Conduct a workplace risk assessment and recommend appropriate control strategies to management.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the skills and knowledge required to create a safe workplace and effective organisational culture.
  4. Collaborate on risk-based approaches to workplace injury prevention with key stakeholders.

  1. Introduction to principles of safety and health, and to key stakeholders.
  2. Developing organisational culture and high performance.
  3. Work health and safety legislation.
  4. Hazards and risk management.
  5. The role of operational management and health and safety professionals.
  6. Preparing an occupational health and safety management system.
  7. Developing employee buy-in.
  8. Analysing organisational health and safety performance.
  9. Planning for emergencies.
  10. Workers' compensation and injury management.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
