Description

This unit focuses on the management of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) processes. Students will explore occupational health and safety management systems, various accident investigation techniques as well as techniques for the evaluation and auditing of existing occupational safety management systems. Case studies drawn mainly from the mining, resources and the construction industries will be utilised to demonstrate industry best practice.

Students must have successfully completed either OHS6132 or OHS6205 before undertaking this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate contemporary Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) management theories, performance, and principles to build safety leadership capacity to strengthen workplace health and safety practice.
  2. Apply evidence-based interventions aimed at improving workplace health and safety practice in the workplace.
  3. Communicate with clarity and purpose the rationale for health and safety initiatives using appropriate business language to raise the profile of safety in professional contexts.
  4. Apply self-management skills by evaluating and building awareness of workplace health and safety professional associations to support professional development planning.

Unit Content

  1. Management of workplace health and safety at the corporate level, including governance, management, and leadership theories and practice.
  2. The implementation of contemporary workplace health and safety, and environmental management program and practices and their role in organisational management and governance at work.
  3. Workplace health and safety performance measurement.
  4. Health and safety professional in practice, including the development of a OHS business case.
  5. Collect, analysis and synthesise workplace health and safety information and data through OHS (WHS) information systems incorporating auditing principles.
  6. Professional capability & development aligned with body of knowledge and professional certification.
  7. Communication and the management of workplace health and safety information.
  8. Workplace health and safety management models incorporating modern management practices.
  9. Leadership in workplace health, safety policies, procedures, practices and governance.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
