This unit focuses on the business practices and management of safety aspects of occupational (work) health and safety processes. Students will further enhance their skills in the development of occupational (work) health and safety leadership, to enable them to promote and provide strategic direction, by setting performance measures, and monitoring performance. Students study leadership, governance and management theories and evaluate their role in organisational management and governance. Unit content explores the collection, analysis and synthesis of workplace health and safety information and data, through OHS (WHS) information systems, including auditing principles. Through the creation of a professional portfolio, students evaluate and capture evidence of their professional capability development aligned to the body of knowledge required for work in their chosen field of Occupational Health and Safety.
Students must have successfully completed either OHS6132 or OHS6205 before undertaking this unit.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies
Learning opportunities include case study discussion and analysis, where students apply knowledge to evaluate authentic workplace situations and work collaboratively to formulate and communicate appropriate solutions. Case studies will be drawn mainly from the resources, oil and gas, sectors and the priority industries outlined in the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 will be utilised to demonstrate industry best practice.

Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
