Description

This is one of three practical units specialising in occupational hygiene. In this unit students will gain skills in the identification and assessment of potential risks from a range of physical and biological hazards in the workplace. These skills are fundamental for practitioners wanting to undertake roles in the field of occupational hygiene. Students are required to utilize and synthesize a range of information sources including scientific literature, legislation, standards and guidelines, when making decisions about the outcomes of a workplace practical assessment. Students will have an opportunity to use a range of OH sampling equipment.

Online delivery supported by discussion groups, study modules and prescribed texts with a compulsory 3 day on-campus workshop, normally held at the Joondalup campus.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the physical and biological hazard exposure level of workers using a range of sampling equipment and monitoring techniques.
  2. Evaluate the health impact of physical and biological hazard exposure against published best practice standards and guidelines.
  3. Report hazard exposure monitoring outcomes against the AIOH reporting guidelines for a range of audiences.
  4. Critically analyse the outcomes of a whole of site monitoring program in collaboration with other professionals.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
