Description

The unit provides practical instruction in working creatively with technical theatre elements such as lighting and sound. There is particular emphasis on the equipment, roles, processes, procedures and documents used in the professional theatre and performance industry such as prompt copies, design plans and other relevant technical documents.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse dramatic texts for the purpose of producing appropriate technical theatre documents such as plans, prompt copies and blocking notation.
  2. Apply sound design principles using industry-relevant software.
  3. Communicate ideas and concepts using appropriate language and document format to technical staff in performance and theatre design, from the perspective of Director.

Unit Content

  1. Introduction to staging and design principles with particular emphasis on use of light and sound.
  2. Designing and using processes and associated documents required for roles such as stage manager and production manager. Indicative examples are scheduling template and prompt copies amongst others.
  3. Introduction to relevant technical equipment and software required for designing light and sound inf live performance.
  4. Roles and responsibilities for technical and backstage staff on live productions.

Workshops, illustrated lectures, master classes, tutorials.
