Description

The basic principles and operating practices of writing dramatic material for the stage, with particular focus on dramatic structure, characterisation and dialogue.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply the understanding of dramatic construction to the enhancement of their acting skills.
  2. Demonstrate basic principles and operating practices of writing dramatic material for the stage.
  3. Understand dramatic structure, characterisation and dialogue.
  4. Write dramatic material that demonstrates an understanding of character, dialogue and structure.

Unit Content

  1. Alternative approaches to structure: epic, Brechtian, surrealist, dramatic devise, expressionist.
  2. Character differentiation and main characteristics.
  3. Dramatic spine.
  4. Forward motion.
  5. Objectives and their resolution.
  6. Obstacles and complications.
  7. Principles of Dramaturgy.
  8. Principles of character construction and development.
  9. Principles of theatricality and theatre language.
  10. Protagonist and Antagonist.
  11. Scene analysis.
  12. Techniques of dialogue.
  13. The classic three-act structure.
  14. Turning points, exposition, conflict, crisis, climax and plot resolution.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
