Description

This unit is designed to allow students to undertake a special topic as an individualised programme of instruction and guided experience. Topics can be conducted as a work place integrated learning activity or via appropriate production, presentation and performance opportunities that arise in the university, community and professional environment. The objective is to allow students to independently explore more in-depth learning in a focused area of interest which is not available elsewhere in their course work. Entry into these units is subject to the applicant's suitability to the activity selected and the approval of the Course Coordinator. This unit will be conducted under close guidance of a supervisor with articulated project guidelines and objectives.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Begin to engage with artform practice in an independent manner.
  2. Begin to explore, select and understand contemporary theoretical issues in their chosen area.
  3. Demonstrate a series of learning outcomes showing an awareness of recent developments and literature, where appropriate, relating to the special topic.
  4. Progressively show evidence of the development of an advanced understanding of the topic studied.

Unit Content

  1. However, it is expected that this will normally involve building of body of knowledge through an examination of background literature and relevant source material, as well as an examination of secondary source materials including CD recordings, video and film, live broadcasts and public concerts, where appropriate.
  2. Participating in agreed learning activities and keeping an appropriate record throughout the programme.
  3. Reflecting upon the learning experience, and demonstrating appropriate learning outcomes.
  4. Students will analyse and reflect on a broad range of issues associated with contemporary and traditional arts in their area selected, including topics such as the new arts, significance of arts in society, the life and health of an artist, quality in the arts, cultural integrity in the arts and multi-cultural arts. Through these units, students will explore, select and understand contemporary theoretical issues, and place their practice within a global artistic context. Unit content for this programme will be negotiated individually with each student concerned. However, it is expected that this will normally involve:
