Description

An introduction to contemporary issues, knowledge and skills required to engage and teach in Health Education in secondary schools. Emphasis will be placed on the nature and purpose of Health Education in schools, and its role in the broader delivery of outcomes from the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Learning Area. Students will pay specific attention to best practice models of teaching and learning in Health Education, and utilise these to plan effective curriculum and lessons in the classroom.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Both on-campus and residency mode of delivery are available. Selected Pre-service Teachers may complete some aspects of the unit within the residency schools as part of the residency mode.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the significance of the Health Education in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area in Secondary Education.
  2. Identify and apply best practice models of teaching and learning, through a variety of Health Education contexts.
  3. Identify the range of contemporary delivery modes in Health Education.
  4. Plan, teach and evaluate lessons from an outcomes based perspective.

Unit Content

  1. Best practice models and resources in Health Education and their links to the Curriculum Framework Principles of Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
  2. Planning teaching and learning units and lessons in Health Education.
  3. The current state of Health Education in WA secondary schools, including the Health Studies Course of Study.
  4. The nature and purpose of Health Education.
