Description

In this unit, students investigate the creative capacities of the analog camera, black and white film processing and darkroom printmaking techniques. The potential of analog photography is examined through studying the literature on photographic style and method and through the production of challenging projects, encouraging interpretative and expressive uses of camera and printmaking techniques.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Competently use analog photographic equipment and materials.
  2. Manipulate photographic equipment and materials to express ideas.
  3. Creatively incorporate presentational codes, selective focus, duration, push processing and printmaking in production.
  4. Compare and contrast the work of selected analog photographers.

Unit Content

  1. Instruction in the operation of a 35mm, analog single lens reflex camera.
  2. Introduction to elementary film processing and print making techniques.
  3. Identification of characteristics of photographic style as illustrated by selected photographers.
  4. Examination of significant bodies of work demonstrating the creative uses of analog photographic practices and materials.

Seminars, workshops and fieldwork.
