In this unit, students investigate the creative capacities of the analog camera, black and white film processing and darkroom printmaking techniques. The potential of analog photography is examined through studying the literature on photographic style and method and through the production of challenging projects, encouraging interpretative and expressive uses of camera and printmaking techniques.

Seminars are used in this unit that helps foster a learner-centered approach. While a lecture format is used to introduce both technical and aesthetic considerations related to analogue photographic practice, hands-on workshops offer practical skills in manual analogue camera operation, film processing and photographic printmaking. Students are encouraged to participate in open discussions to the photographic work that is shown in class as well as present their own research and photographic work that is produced over the course of the unit.
