Description

This unit is the second stage of a research project which will help develop critical and analytical skills by undertaking and completing a research project in a relevant area. The project is carried out on an individual basis and should involve collecting, analysing and reporting on data from a small research project. Research projects are supervised by the students nominated PhD principal supervisor, and assessed by nominated examiners. Project findings will be presented to other students and supervisors as part of a student conference for the unit.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

On-campus students are expected to meet regularly with their principal supervisor as part of the supervised independent research component of this unit. Online students will have regular contact with their supervisor via video conferencing, phone or email.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed PRO6000 Research Project 1

Co-Requisite Rule

Unit is open to enrolment for students in courses J42 and J43 only.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Integrate body of knowledge and recent developments in a discipline, including research principles and methods to undertake original reseach.
  2. Apply problem solving and critical thinking skills and techniques to investigate complex reseach problems.
  3. Organise and analyse data, and evaluate findings in a research context.
  4. Argue and justify methodological approaches to addressing specific research problem.
  5. Communicate research outcomes clearly and succinctly in a multiple formats to differing audiences.
  6. Synthesise complex ideas and concepts to extend and/or test relevant theory.
  7. Independently implement an original research plan.
  8. Integrate and comply with principles of research responsibility, integrity and ethics in the conduct of research.

Unit Content

  1. Knowledge and practice in applied research, specifically in relation to the students research project.
  2. Analysing data and reporting findings.
  3. Demonstrating validity and reliability in research findings.
  4. Preparing research reports.
  5. Preparing successful research presentations.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
