This unit introduces the students to the fundamental techniques, skills and equipment underpinning professional paramedic practice. Students will apply a step by step systematic approach to scene and patient assessment, developing their skills in primary emergency management processes including pre-hospital basic life support. The fundamental techniques, skills and approaches for professional paramedic practice will be developed in a controlled, simulated, interdisciplinary team environment. The context of professional paramedic practice will be provided in an external placement of approximately 40 hours.
Off-campus students are advised that this unit has a compulsory workshop held at the Joondalup campus. The theory modules for this unit may however be studied online. On-campus and off-campus students are required to undertake an external clinical placement as part of this unit.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
