Description

This unit further supports student progress towards a role as a professional paramedic. Attendance at a 5-day on-campus intensive practical workshop will enable students to focus on increasing their proficiency in the standard paramedic approach to the assessment and treatment of sick and injured patients in the pre-hospital environment. It will continue to develop essential paramedic skills in clinical decision making and effective communication to ensure patient care is safe, clinically effective and socially and culturally adept in the pre-hospital setting. The application of professional paramedic standards, simulation based education and clinical reasoning activities will prepare students to assess and manage patients in the discipline of paramedicine.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students may be required to attend evening or weekend classes.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed PSP1108 and PST2102.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded PSP2102, SCH2205

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Perform the standard approach to the assessment of sick and injured patients in pre-hospital environments.
  2. Perform safe and effective procedures in defibrillation, drug administration and external cardiac compressions.
  3. Apply clinical knowledge to justify treatment decisions and strategies for patient care in pre-hospital situations.
  4. Communicate and interact with diverse socio-cultural populations in accordance with the AHPRA Professional Capabilities for Registered Paramedics.

  1. Comprehensive standard approach to patient assessment in pre-hospital environments.
  2. Paramedic care of patients with medical conditions.
  3. Paramedic care of patients with traumatic injuries.
  4. Paramedic drug administration and intravenous access.
  5. Paramedic care of cardiac arrest.
  6. Patient centred interview techniques in the pre-hospital setting.
  7. Communication and interaction with diverse socio-cultural populations.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
