Description

This unit focuses on development of practical paramedic skills in patient assessment, evidence-based treatment and chronic disease management. Learning occurs within healthcare and controlled clinical environments, under the supervision of clinical staff. Students gain experience in assessing a patient’s capacity to receive care, maintaining accurate patient records, using patient information management systems and working in interprofessional teams. Students further develop their paramedic skills and the ability to interact with people from socially and culturally diverse populations. Students will undertake placements in the capacity of an ECU student and will develop interprofessional skills by attending a diverse range of placements, such as Aged Care, Primary Care and Mental Health.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Work integrated clinical placements of at least 160 hours over the full year are held in WA and scheduled in and out of semester across a 24/7 day period in line with healthcare provision. Placement partners may change placement timing and shifts with minimal notice because of operational demands. This is outside of the control of ECU.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed PSP1108 Clinical Skills for Paramedic Practice 1 and either PSP1236 Paramedic Clinical Placements 1 or PST1108 Theoretical Perspectives In Paramedical Practice 1

Only students enrolled in K89 can enrol into this unit.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must have completed or be studying PSP2103 Clinical Skills for Paramedic Practice 2.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded PST2110, PSP2222.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate clearly and sensitively with patients and professionals from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds.
  2. Apply a systematic approach to patient history taking and assessment under supervision.
  3. Formulate appropriate evidence-based treatment strategies for patients with chronic and acute health conditions.
  4. Reflect on personal healthcare experiences to improve professional paramedic capability development.

Unit Content

  1. Risk management and fitness to practice.
  2. Assessment and safe treatment of patients with acute and chronic healthcare conditions.
  3. Clinical decision making for patients with complex conditions in the primary healthcare setting.
  4. Differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of the chronically ill patient.
  5. Application of therapeutic communication skills including cultural and social awareness in an interprofessional healthcare setting.
  6. Comprehensive patient history taking process and documentation.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Students will undertake, and be assessed on, authentic activities through engagement with industry and community partners.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are required to maintain a placement workbook during their clinical placement, where they reflect and review their practice and experiences. A placement portfolio is developed to record professional capabilities to support future paramedic registration.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Plagiarism

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
