Description

Students will develop skills related to patient management and advanced life support by participating in the care of patients in a variety of clinical situations. Work integrated clinical practice will be available within controlled clinical environments and under the supervision of placement staff.

Students must pass 1 units from PSP2103

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Conceptualise the role of the decision making framework and differential diagnosis used by medical and nursing staff.
  2. Demonstrate basic and advanced airway competencies.
  3. Demonstrate peripheral vein cannulation.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to reflect on their learning experience and plan for future learning.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a pre-hospital and/or interdisciplinary team in provision of care to patients from a variety of cultures.
  6. Manage an intravenous infusion.
  7. Manage patients from any culture with advanced airway in situ during incident management.

Unit Content

  1. Airway management.
  2. Autonomy of practice.
  3. Care including peripheral vein cannulation and intravenous infusion of an unconscious multicultural patient.
  4. Differential diagnosis, reflection of learning and care of patients with injuries and illnesses.
  5. Scene and incident management within interdisciplinary teams.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Clinical placements and scenario simulation. This unit requires mandatory attendance at a range of external clinical placements to facilitate learning.
