Description

Students will develop skills related to patient management and advanced life support by participating in the care of patients in a variety of clinical situations. Work integrated clinical practice will be available within controlled clinical environments and under the supervision of placement staff.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Placements require students to attend out of hours and outside of normal semester weeks due to the allocation from partner healthcare providers.

Students must pass 3 units (PSP2103, PST2109, PST2102)

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate peripheral vein cannulation.
2. Conceptualise the role of the decision making framework and differential diagnosis used by medical and nursing staff.
3. Manage patients from any culture during incident management.
4. Demonstrate basic and advanced airway competencies.
5. Manage an intravenous infusion.
6. Demonstrate the ability to reflect on their learning experience and plan for future learning.
7. Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a pre-hospital and/or interdisciplinary team in provision of care to patients from a variety of cultures.

Unit Content

1. Care including peripheral vein cannulation and intravenous infusion of an unconscious multicultural patient.
2. Scene and incident management within interdisciplinary teams.
3. Autonomy of practice.
4. Differential diagnosis, reflection of learning and care of patients with injuries and illnesses.
5. Airway management.

Learning Experience

ON-CAMPUS

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will complete a minimum of 200 hours of clinical placements and scenario simulation. This unit requires mandatory attendance at a range of external clinical placements to facilitate learning.
