Description

Students gain experience in managing patients with serious injuries and illness and consolidate their ability to assess patients and provide evidence-based care at a paramedic level. Students learn how to treat patients with complex care needs in a variety of healthcare settings and how to advocate on behalf of patients to ensure they receive appropriate treatment and care. Experience is gained working in diverse interprofessional healthcare teams and students are responsible for ensuring they work in safe and professionally appropriate ways. Learning occurs within controlled clinical environments, under the supervision of clinical staff. Students will undertake placements in the capacity of an ECU student and will develop interprofessional skills by attending a diverse range of high acuity placements, such as Emergency Departments, Mental Health and other approved specialties.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Work integrated clinical placements of at least 120 hours over the full year are held in WA and scheduled in and out of semester across a 24/7 day period in line with healthcare provision. Placement partners may change placement timing and shifts with minimal notice because of operational demands. This is outside of the control of ECU.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed PSP2338 Paramedic Clinical Placements 2 and PSP2103 Clinical Skills for Paramedics 2 OR PSP2222 Primary Care Placements and PSP2103 Clinical Skills for Paramedics 2

This unit is only available to students studying K89.

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must have studied or be studying PSP3101 Advanced Paramedical Practice 1.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced paramedic knowledge to make independent decisions in supervised settings.
  2. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to enable continuity of patient care in prehospital and healthcare settings.
  3. Formulate evidence informed prehospital treatment strategies for patients with serious injuries and illness.
  4. Reflect on personal decisions and behaviours to improve ongoing professional paramedic practice.

  1. Scene and incident management within interdisciplinary teams.
  2. Comprehensive history and assessment of patients with emergent healthcare conditions.
  3. Differential diagnosis, reflection of learning and care of patients with serious injuries and illnesses.
  4. Autonomy and clinical decision making for patients with complex conditions in the emergency healthcare setting.
  5. Application of therapeutic communication skills including cultural and social awareness in an interprofessional healthcare setting.

Students are required to maintain a placement workbook during their clinical placement, where they reflect and review their practice and experiences. A placement portfolio is developed to record professional capabilities to support paramedic registration.
